Javier's Story
Javier* is a remarkable and bright young man seeking asylum in the United States. He grew up in a loving and supportive family, but in an increasingly dangerous neighborhood, as his family home in his native country is located on the border between rival, transnational criminal gangs. As Javier grew into his teenage years, members from these gangs began to take an interest in him and eventually sought to recruit him. However, Javier was determined to forge a future for himself, and he graduated high school and enrolled in university. However, as the threats worsened, he was forced to stay at home and avoid going out. Then one day, Javier was almost killed when a gang member confronted him at gunpoint, asking him why he had not responded to the gang and that he didn't have much longer. By God's grace, Javier was let go that day, but he and his family knew he couldn't stay in his country any longer.
Javier was temporarily allowed into the United States through the Central American Minors Program, or CAM. But with the threat of gang violence still present in his home country, he decided to seek asylum. His application is pending. He has his work permit, and intends to apply to college here in the US to continue his education. He lives with his wonderfully supportive aunt and uncle, who are both U.S. citizens, and he is hopeful for a safe and secure future in the U.S.
